The Haven is a no kill animal shelter located in Fairhope, AL. The objective of this PBL project is to raise awareness about shelter animals through cross curricular lessons and projects. Throughout the year we have been able to evaluate and assist with a real life situation. The PBL project is incorporated throughout our curriculum in science, social studies, reading, writing, speaking and math. The children are able to use technology to assist them to communicate and collaborate with a live connection using google plus on their classroom Promethean Board. Throughout the year students collect loose change to donate to The Haven with a goal of $500 for the year. Ala. Common Core I Can Statements and Standards integrated in the PBL project are: 2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to add numbers within 1000 and know when to regroup. I can understand place value. I can use what I know about place value to help me add and subtract. 2.NBT.B.5 I can add two-digit numbers. 2.NBT.A.1B I can show that I understand the numbers I use when I count by hundreds, have a certain number of hundreds, 0 tens and 0 ones.
Pets on Parade is one of the fund raisers the students have during the year to support The Haven PBL project. Students at GSES are asked to make a dollar donation and bring in a picture of their pet. Towel,Blanket and Toy Drive is another fund raiser that the students enjoy working on for the homeless animals at The Haven. The children are asked to donate, blankets, towels, toys, dog beds, and any other items that will assist with caring for the homeless animals as they wait for their forever homes. The children are also reaching out to businesses in Gulf Shores to assist with the towels and blankets for their class PBL project. Envelopes for The Haven The children illustrate around 200 envelopes provided by The Haven to be used in the public adoptions of the animals. Every time an animal is adopted all the paper work for the animal is placed in one of the envelopes. It is then given to the new owner to keep all the animals' adoption information in.
